Hi everyone: having seen other candidates weigh in, I wanted to add my opinion on the Poppy Lane closure. I don’t have one. My job if elected is to represent the public. What I will say on the topic is that it has been in the spotlight too long. This is not The Poppy Lane Referendum, it is a Municipal Election.
Yes, it’s controversial, yes, some people are against it, some aren’t. One community minded local businessman put a lot of effort into getting a petition signed solely for the ‘good of the community’. It was delivered to the municipal office. He chose not to send a delegation to speak at the meeting where it was reviewed, therefore it is classified as correspondence. When brought up at the meeting the process for reconsideration was explained a motion was asked for and there was no motion to reconsider. Therefore, the closure stands. Video of the meeting Poppy Lane is addressed around 1 hour 52-minute mark https://westperth.civicweb.net/document/98792/…
People may not like it, but that is how the Municipal Council works. That said the issue is dead for the upcoming election. Upon reviewing the process for reconsideration, my understanding is that it cannot be brought before council for 1 year. So, let’s see what happens with the plans for the space in the mean time shall we?
My suggestion is, move on, challenge all of us candidates on other relevant issues that are important to the ENTIRE community for this election. I look forward to hearing from you!
